About

David Riley

One of Dr. Riley's primary interest in medicine has been to investigate the evidence supporting health and wellness—evidence that drives change in clinical practice. He has used the systematic collection of data from patient encounters and systems-oriented approaches to healthcare delivery to explore sustainable models for clinical practice. He approaches medicine with the belief that healing can come from unexpected places including family, friends, and the communities in which we live. He consults on case reports, clinical practice models, education, research, regulation, and healthcare policy in Europe, the Middle East and the United States.

Dr. Riley has participated in the development of health research reporting guidelines since 2000 as a member of the CONSORT group. In 2011 he led the development of the CARE Guidelines— reporting guidelines for writing case reports that guide the systematic collection of data from patient encounters. The CARE guidelines were published simultaneously in seven medical journals in 2013 and presented at the International Congress on Peer Review and Biomedical Publication sponsored by JAMA and the BMJ in Chicago. The CARE writing templates and checklists are available in 6 languages at www.CARE-statement.org and are listed as a key reporting guideline on the Equator Network (www.equator-network.org).

Dr. Riley is on the board of of the Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine and is the Case Reports editor for The Permanente Journal, published by Kaiser Permanente. He is married and lives in Portland, Oregon.
